In describing that distinction, Elliot Eisner says that “scientists” (and this certainly includes social scientists) tend to emphasize “truth,” whereas artists emphasize “meaning.” The significance here is that scientists tend to emphasize a rational, objective idea of truth, whereas artists (and I include filmmakers here) will utilize “artistic license” in the attempt at getting to the more subjective, emotional “meanings.”
