I am indebted to many people for their help and encouragement throughout this project. The staff and students of the high school where the original research was done must be commended for their cooperation and candor. I hope the publication of this work will enable school officials across the country to recognize themselves in Lakeside High School and re-examine their practices.

Karen Tonso has been an outstanding teacher, mentor, and friend from the first day I walked into her office. Linda Tillman, who joined me in North Carolina, gave me confidence to pursue my work and both challenged and encouraged me. Bob Holley has served variously as boss, colleague, friend and mentor and could always be counted on for frank advice. Susan Fino awakened in me a love for constitutional law and made me wish I had gone to law school right out of college.

Completing this research project was only accomplished through the love of a supportive family. To my mom, I hope I have earned the pride you show in me. To my children, Elizabeth, Alexander and Derek, with your patience and support, I could not fail. To my husband, Bill, I could not have attempted, much less completed, this research and subsequent book without your selfless love and support. I thank you all.

And finally, I am indebted to Toni Tan and the entire staff of Cambria Press for their patience, creativity and good humor. They made the entire book publishing experience a delight, even for a first-time author.
