Chapter Two
Background
The broad nature of this question requires some background study on existing forms of pornography and theoretical contributions to psychosexual development. The examination of the pornography literature explores various media, Internet sexual content and activities, pornography’s effects on spouses and families, and social feminist critique of pornography. Works from diverse theorists will encompass reviews of an analytic feminist understanding of the psychology of women, object relations theory, issues of intimacy, and forgiveness and hope. The original research was to focus on Catholic women; the review will therefore include the Catholic Church’s teachings on sex and sexuality. This background study will help determine which psychodynamic understanding best illuminates the experiences of women in the research study.
It is not the intent of this research to examine compulsions of husbands and their normative or pathological development.
