When the researcher and the clinician assume that the mind is an entity and the Internet is a separate entity then we can arrive at complex ideas to deal with complex situations. The mind has an unconscious; it has a self; it can be analyzed and motivations brought into the treatment setting. The Internet has no mind, hence no motivation. It is there in all its complexity, a library of immense proportion. We can pick and choose what we borrow, or what we purchase. Some people will go for purely intellectual stimulation or communication; others will be powerfully drawn to sexual stimulation and intrigue.

The reader will find many useful ideas to use when working with individuals or couples. This is not a “how to” or recipe book. It is for the clinician who uses research to inform the practice, and a powerful reminder that when part of a couple is involved in sexual intrigue, it effects their spouse and their spouse brings to the situation their own history, their own dynamics, their own disappointments, and their own hopes for something better.
