Joanna Gewertz Harris: BS in physical education-dance, The University of Wisconsin-Madison (1955); M.A. in dance from Mills College, Oakland, CA, M.B.A. in arts administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA and Ph.D. in dramatic arts from the University of California-Berkeley. With Marian Van Tuyl Campbell, Dr. Harris co-edited IMPULSE Magazine, a dance annual published in San Francisco from 1950–1970.

Professor Emerita and founder of the Department of Modern Dance, the University of Utah. An Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Education, Dr. Hayes’ book, Dance Composition and Production, is a standard text in dance programs.
Maxine Sheets-Johnstone: B.A. in French and comparative literature, the University of California-Berkeley; M.S. and Ph.D. in dance and dance-philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among other works, Dr. Sheets-Johnstone is the author of The Phenomenology of Dance (1966).
