Where possible, transcription has been made directly from the page, though, in some instances, especially the early nineteenth-century writings of the supplementary anthology-within-an-anthology, electronic transcriptions from reputable sources have been employed. For purposes of historical transcription, first editions were preferred. For nineteenth-century work in particular the earliest, readily available edition for which verifiable page numbers existed was used. Unless otherwise noted, work has been anthologized in ascending chronological order by publication date of the edition used as a source; where publication years matched for any two or more selections, works have been arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. Original page numbers, as assigned in the source edition, have been footnoted for scholarly use. In typesetting and keying these texts, every attempt has been made to avoid errors in transcription, though some error is inevitable.

No attempt has been made to alter these historic readings to include gender-inclusive or politically-correct language. Instead, underrepresented groups have purposefully been given voice in the selection of these diverse readings.

In consultation with the U.S. Copyright Office, the historical work contained in this anthology is believed to be out of copyright and in the public domain. Sources for individual, anthologized works are fully acknowledged in footnotes listing bibliographic data.
