Chapter 1: | The Orbit of the Eye |
We could invest time in getting to know our neighbors and building a sense of neighborhood, geographical belonging. We can do all of these things, and we can do one more: we can engage in an ancient art which is naturally social, demands interdependence, and—when practiced according to a humanistic ethic—fosters and encourages presence. This, of course, is the subject of this book: we can put on a play. We can enter into the risks and rewards of personal exposure, acceptance, collaboration, group fear and group triumph. We can practice and improve upon the art of conversation. We can learn to listen with our whole selves and to speak with every gesture. We can join a theatre.
