Equally important was the “unfeigned patriotism” of the Home Front Italians perhaps best described by an immigrant Italian mother whose American GI son was captured : “We want America to win. We are over here since 1904, we’ve never been back … We don’t care about Italy anymore.” Clearly, her ordeal was one of the many “required extra measures of loyalty and patriotism” on the road to assimilation.
The answer to the author’s second question regarding immigrants whose native countries or co-religionists may be hostile to our security is not fully developed. Nevertheless, the author has artfully described a road map successfully employed by the Italian Immigrants … At the end of the day, America is a welcoming homeland to those who are willing to work hard, assimilate and make sacrifices for the common good. In the oft repeated words of my sainted Mother: God Bless America.
