It does not matter if most law schools require two or three years college, or that most law students have a four-year undergraduate degree; any one who can pass the bar, law school, undergraduate degree or no degree, two years college or no years college, on-line law school training, correspondence law school training, University of London external training (which is an EXCELLENT means of a very sound law degree which reasonably should meet the basic requirements for entry level exams in the US, and should be so recognized by State bars). Traditionally, high school was all that was required for the formal study of law (that most students were college graduates is irrelevant).33
Adding further, Cromwell goes on to say:
In the 1930s many high school clerical workers in Washington attended the National Law College and obtained the LLB or even the graduate degree, LLM. Later the National Law College was absorbed into George Washington University School of Law, and later the degrees, the LLB degrees, were changed to a JD from George Washington University, thus making high school graduates who attended National Law College JD graduates of an ABA approved law school. I think euphemism, symbolism, and charade were the primary factors in attempting to elevate the title of the first degree in law. As a distinct field, LLB is apt and appropriate as a first processional degree, the JD is the equivalent, and, in my judgment, has nothing to do with any recognition of being some sort of graduate type degree. It definitely is not, even though many people with a JD have a BSc in something, and most schools demand it.34
Against this background, we now turn to examine the academic standing of a JD degree.

In the US and elsewhere, a number of theories and assertions, surrounding the pecking order at which a JD should be placed, have preceded and followed through from the time the JD was introduced. Is a JD equivalent to a Doctorate? Let us, first, take a more reasoned look at the origins of the title ‘Doctor’ .
