Writing a book is a solitary process but not necessarily a lonely one. Researchers writing a scholarly book bring to bear their training, guidance from their academic mentors and support from friends and family. This book would not have been possible without that support, which came from my parents, whose steady presence and love have helped keep my ship afloat. My parents are my greatest feature, and I am constantly awed by their grace and wisdom. Thank you, mom and dad.

My Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Patricia Curtin, embodies the highest standards of teaching. —Thank you— seems wholly inadequate for her role in this study that was based on my dissertation. In addition to serving as the second coder for the quantitative analysis of this study, she guided me through the entire dissertation creation process. These plaudits alone do not do justice to her contributions, which extend far beyond what I can summarize here. She is a world-class scholar whose unselfishness and unwavering encouragement made this dissertation a voyage of discovery.

I would also like to thank the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Communications; my Ph.D. committee, Dr. Tom Bowers, Dr. Patricia Parker, Dr. Dulcie Straughan, and Dr. Paul Solomon; ?The SEALS, who shared in the struggle; my great teachers at ?William J. Green & Associates:
