The opportunity to try out some of these revisionist ideas was accorded by the Modern Japan Seminar of Columbia University at a special session in October 1985. My grandson Steven Ushioda provided invaluable assistance toward computerizing the manuscript. Jo Chang helped in this as well.
Let us now proceed to reconsider the course of American relations with the Far East in those halcyon, antemeridian, previolent years of the twentieth century, knowing it to be a twice-told tale, but hoping to understand better some of the reasons for the turmoil that has come in their wake.
