At various times during the completion of the project, Professor Yen Shang-Luan, then of Chung Cheng University in Chiayi County, Taiwan, provided invaluable technical advice.
Lin Meng-Chun provided the initial translation into Chinese. Two Tunghai faculty members of the English department contributed additional expertise in retranslating the research instrument. Professor William Fisher, an American of Chinese descent, translated it back into English and Professor Jean Chen, a faculty member from Taiwan who taught many years in the United States, translated the instrument from the English back again into Chinese. Tunghai University students who were interviewers included Chang Shienpei, Lin Shiou Huang, Huang Shüe Ying, Yang Ya Wen, Sun Ching San, Chen Yan Ru, Chen Ya Wen, Huang Li Sha, Chang Shu Dhr, and Lin Twei Ling. They were remarkably diligent and precise in carrying out their responsibilities. Lan Shau Chi helped in the collection of population data in the household registers located in each district office; she also participated in the training of the interviewers and the debriefing process. In the final preparation of the manuscript, we are deeply indebted to the untiring efforts of Marilyn Hilton.
