Chapter : | Watchman |
- the watchtower shouts “Wolves!", they will start beating the tin drums. The sound of the drumbeat will spread all over the wilderness and reach the people in our village. Then, the people will prepare themselves for a sudden attack by the wolves. As you know well, wolves are quite sly. Once they realize their attack has been discovered, they pull out and wait for the next chance. This has been repeated endlessly.
(Suddenly WATCHMAN A on the watchtower shouts.)
- A: Wolves, wolves! Wolves are coming!
(The hand of WATCHMAN A is raised up high. Then, it points to the direction where wolves are spotted. Other watchmen under the watchtower begin to beat the tin drums. Shouts and drumbeats continue. The level of anxiety increases gradually. NARRATOR runs away. WATCHMAN B, an old man, beats the tin drum defiantly. WATCHMAN C, a boy, keeps missing his beat out of fear, and now, terrified, crouches down to the ground as low as he can.)
- A: Stop the drumbeat! Wolves are gone!
-
C: (Still frightened.) Are they?
- B: Don't worry! Now they are gone.
- C: But… I didn't see anything.
- B: Because you are here on the low ground, you couldn't see them at all. But, as you see, the watchman on the watchtower is way up there. He can see far-away things. You should realize he is in a different place from you.
- A: Wolves, wolves! Wolves are coming!
(WATCHMAN C, bewildered, crouches down again while WATCHMAN B beats the tin drum.)
