Chapter : | Five |
- truth is that there were salted sardines in my barrel. Perhaps it's the food for the people on this ship. There are still two of them left at the bottom of the barrel. Gentlemen, if you don't believe me, come and see for yourselves.
(Except for E, they all go to D's barrel and look inside.)
- D: Gentlemen! Wasn't I right? Isn't it true?
-
C: I can't see it well. But, if you were a sardine …
- D: Take a good look at the inside of the barrel.
-
A: (He looks disappointed?) He's right. There are sardines.
- B: It's true.
- C: I can see it, too.
-
D: (He is ecstatic but A, B, and D are quite disappointed. E looks at them.)
-
B: (To A.) What should we do about this?
-
A: (He is at a loss.) I don't know.
- C: Is it that our lives are no longer safe?
- B: The fact is yes.
- C: We were safe a moment ago.
-
B: (Pointing at D.) Because he won't go back to being a sardine, everything returned to the way it was. What should we do …
- D: What do you mean what should we do? What can we do except to go back to our investigation and see if we smell?
- B: We've already done the investigation, haven't we?
-
D: That's right. (Short pause.) But, we didn't investigate her. (Pointing at E.) Why didn't I think of it before? We obviously have a right to investigate her.
- C: What you are saying is that we have to make that woman into a sardine?
- D: What I said was we should exercise our right. Do you understand?
(A, B, C, and D run to her, put their noses close to the woman, and begin to smell her.)
