to share the money, no, there is no way he would do that; the captain is sure to give an order like, ‘I don't know these people. I never received any fare from them, either. I'm sure they crawled into this ship as stowaways. Toss them into the ocean's depths.’ Now do you see?
B: Now I see. That the captain will toss us into the ocean's depths.
C: The water will be cold …
D: In the water, we'll be dead.
B: It could be very pretty there. Fish would swim, seaweed would grow, and we might even get to see the pretty innocent eyes of a young whale. But, if we were to die, what good would any of that do …
A: No, it won't do us any good.
D: (To A.) How did you know that the captain would deny knowing us?
A: If you think about it, it's pretty obvious. What does it matter to the captain whether we get to our destination or not? If it becomes a problem for him, it'd be to his advantage just to toss us into the sea. That way, he wouldn't have to share the money with anyone.
    A, B, C, D, & E: (Silence.)
D: (He looks as if he has come up with an idea.) Everyone, listen to me. When the others find us, how about being the first one to argue that we didn't pay the captain?
B & C: (After listening to his idea, they cheer loudly.) Let's do that. I don't want to die!
D: That was a really good idea I had, wasn't it? If they drag me to the captain, I'll deny it flat out. “We never gave you any money for the fare.” And then, I'll rub my hands together and beg.
A: You'll beg to save your life?
D: Yes, that's why I'll beg. You don't want to live?
    A: I want to live.
D: Let's decide on begging. The captain will say to the others, “They look pathetic. Let's not kill them.” Something along that line.
