Units of competency may be described schematically as three-dimensional constructs relating to performance, context, and the provision of evidence. They are made up of six main parts. These are the unit title, the unit descriptor, the elements of competency, the performance criteria, the range statement, and the evidence guide (ANTA, 2001a). This may be illustrated figuratively as in figure 2.
The Performance Dimension
The performance dimension of a unit of competency is described by the elements and performance criteria. These are defined as follows.
The elements portray, in observable terms, the components of the purposive action that is the focus of the competency unit.
