Acknowledgments
I am particularly indebted to the residents of Buffalo Creek who allowed me to visit with them in their homes, meet their families, and converse with them many times for more than six years. First among them is Mrs. Gertie Moore. She welcomed me into her home, introduced me to dozens of informed and helpful residents, and served as a sounding board and critic when few others could or would do so. Her faith, compassion, and neighborliness makes Buffalo Creek a better place for many people. Glenna Wiley, Jo and Claude Curry, Joe and Pat Doczi, and Fonzo Jude are among the other good people to whom I am indebted for their friendliness, insights, and trust.
Some of the other residents of Logan County who enhanced my understanding of the people of Buffalo Creek include Reverend and Mrs. Linzel Walls, Reverend Mike Pollard, F. Raamie Barker, Dave Crawford, Darlene Stratton, Arthur Kirkendoll, S. Gillman Burgess, Elizabeth Tackett, and Sheila Miller. Carlene Mowery and the late Dennis Deitz encouraged my work and allowed me to borrow from their own good book about Buffalo Creek.
