I am indebted to many people for their help and encouragement throughout this project. Michael Oppenheimer, my advisor, first suggested that I look into the United State's experience in developing synthetic fuels to see if there are useful lessons for today's policymakers. The very interesting journey of my explorations in the U.S. history of energy policy started from there. Prof. Oppenheimer is a renowned scientist and an active participant in U.S. energy and environmental policy debates. I am a foreigner with little prior knowledge of U.S. history and culture. This book comes from the perfect match between his broad knowledge and my fresh eyes.
Dr. Patricia Fernández-Kelly has always been encouraging and very supportive of my research. She is a fantastic sociologist and provides me with very useful insights into human nature and social mechanisms.
Prof. Robert Socolow is a well-known expert in energy policy. His knowledge and in-depth observation of the energy policy process are of tremendous help to me. He also guided me in the critical thinking and cautious reasoning.
