    1. Once there was a king.
    2. This king was [lit. shouldn't be] no better than you and me.26
    3. He had three daughters.
    4. He told the boy-his minister-“My boy, who will rule after me?”
    5. He [minister] said, “Your sons.”
    6. He said, “Your sons.”
    7. [The king] had two favorite sons.
    8. Both his favorite sons said-one said, “I will,” the other said, “I will.”
    9. Suddenly his unfavorite son came to him; he [king] said, “My son, do you understand the point?”
    10. His minister said, “Majesty [lit. king], don't beat [him], it is not good that he has fallen out of favors, let him also go.”
    11. He [son] came to his mother and said, “Mom, give [me] cookies and barley bread for I am also going.”
    12. “O my baby, [your] father doesn't love you, don't go.”
    13. She said, “Don't go,” [he] said, “I won't.”
    14. [However], he went with them [lit. him].
    15. He brought out his little horse, picked up his sword, and galloped off.
    16. He got down the hill and rode up to his brother[s].
    17. [One of] his brother[s] said, “Which land are you bound for? We will also go that way.”
    18. They got underway [together].
    19. After they got underway, they came to a crossroad.
    20. When this brother [unfavorite son] reached the crossroad, both favorite sons said, “Take the road by which you won't be coming back while we'll take the road by which we'll be coming back.”
    21. Both of them rode down the hill.
    22. Their minister-his father's minister [had] told him, “My son, [if] anyone brings leaves from the Forty-sound tree his blind father's eyes will be healed.”
    23. He [had] replied, “Very well.”
