Anne Escrader, Pamela Cushing, David Jenkins, Luther Smith, Kathleen Cahalan, Tom Reynolds, Sue Mosteller, and the people of L’Arche Daybreak. I would also like to express thanks to Mark Yaconelli and Deborah Arca-Mooney, my former colleagues at the Youth Ministry and Spirituality Project, for their patience and support during a critical phase of the writing process.
My deepest gratitude is reserved for my friends and family who have endured many years of hard toil with me and always been there when I needed them. Without their support and encouragement to write, this project would never have been finished. In particular, I would like to recognize the support of Fay Key and Steve Bullington at the Greenbough House of Prayer and my friends at the former Homes for Growth community who offered their hospitality to me as a person and writer during some difficult years and reminded me to always write from the deepest place within my heart. My parents William and Stella have been there with just the right kind of help at the right time along the way. The late Fred Stambrook also mentored me in many ways and I give thanks for the way in which his deep integrity as a person and scholar inspired me to offer the best of my thinking to the world. My close friend Ingrid Hauss has been a source of gentle encouragement for decades and this work would never have been possible without her love and support. Heartfelt appreciation also goes to those dear friends who have been there as late-night consultants and cheer leaders on the home stretch, particularly Michelle O’Rourke, Cindy Waddick, Christine Kuzyk, and Lynn Hinck.
Finally, among family and friends in the Spirit, I would like to honor and thank the people of L’Arche who have been my greatest teachers in the life of communion. The learning and transformation I have experienced in relationships with them have been one of the great blessings of my life and it is they who have inspired me to share that blessing with the church and the world.
