This book has been in process so long that to thank all those who helped and gave me insights would require a work longer than the manuscript itself. Chronologically, however, Don Costello at Notre Dame and Al Wertheim and Oscar Brockett at Indiana University gave me real grounding in dramatic theory. Howard Stein helped me move from theatre directing to scholarship and the study of American Drama through his NEH Seminar. I could not have moved further, however, without the continual inspiration and conversation with Spring Hill College colleagues, especially fellow Steinians John Hafner and Michael Kaffer. In addition, all three of us received support from Nan Altmayer’s endowment of a chair for the English Department.

Grounding this study in the theatre has only been possible through the resources of the Theatre on Film and Tape collection of the New York Public Library, as well as the clippings files in that amazing resource. My own librarians at Spring Hill were always ready to help find references and publications. In addition, conversations with generous actors and directors have been even more helpful in seeing plays from the inside.
