1.4. Book Outline

I first separate incident activities into three categories: agrarian-, traveling-, and tampering-related events. These categorical distinctions, which are expanded on in Chapter 2, are critical when discovering vulnerabilities that occur within each incident type. Following the division of incidents, historical background, and explanation within each incident category, the remainder of the book concentrates on the relationship between landmine/UXO incidents (disaggregated into accidents and tampering) socioeconomics, agricultural conditions, and the price of metal.

Chapter 3 presents a cross-section model testing accident and tampering rates against several measures of poverty and socioeconomic indicators. Socioeconomic measures include age dependence, single-parent dependence, formal education proportions, firewood–cooking proportions, safe drinking water proportions, K5 districts, migration, population densities, rural/urban status, and sex ratios. I hypothesize that landmine/UXO accidents and tampering incidents are linked to each of these variables in specific ways. Identifying these linkages will assist policy makers in formulating practical plans to preempt the occurrence of landmine/UXO incidents in the form of both accidents and tampering.

Chapter 4 tests various indicators of agricultural vulnerability against landmine/UXO accidents and tampering incidents in an effort to test the hypothesis that the number of incidents rises with increased rates of economic need arising from agricultural shortages. Measures of agricultural vulnerability included in this analysis comprise net rice values, supplies of water, the yield of specific rice varieties, crop diversification, the proportion of crop lost to natural disasters in the form of droughts, floods, and insect infestation, and the ability to substitute rice with other food products.Following formal testing, I propose several policies that will assist in reducing agricultural vulnerability, thus contributing to the reduction in landmine/UXO incidents.
