Throughout the research and writing of this book, I have benefited greatly from the combined efforts of academic scholars, generosity of financial contributors, support of family and friends, contributions of Cambodian individuals and organizations, and the leading hand of God.
Prior to graduate school, I spent 2 years living with Cambodian refugees who fled from the ominous Khmer Rouge regime. I gained a love for the Cambodian people and a passion for the developing world. I owe a debt of gratitude to Kirk Powell, Coach Mike Werner, and Coach Dennis Tesch, who led me to believe in myself and gave me the courage that allowed me to undertake such an endeavor. I also wish to express appreciation to Dr. Günseli Berik, who taught an influential course in development economics and directed me toward graduate school.
