Acknowledgments

This book was written because of the insistence, confidence, inspiration, and assistance of some wonderful people to whom I feel particularly indebted. I owe my deep belief in the value of research and scholarship to serve the public good to (the late) Professor Barry Chevannes and Professor Trevor Munroe of the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus, Jamaica) and my friend, author and attorney Delano Franklyn. I also credit Peter Phillips, former Jamaican minister of national security, whose unwavering commitment to good governance in Jamaica is a source of inspiration and optimism.

I offer sincerest thanks to Drs. Priya Kurian, Patrick Barrett, and Alan Simpson of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, who offered invaluable suggestions, critiques, and considered opinions as I grappled to reconcile the complexities and contradictions of studying and writing about citizen politics and civil society in Jamaica. Their expert academic guidance in a very gregarious atmosphere during my doctoral years played an important role in the quality of this book. I am particularly indebted to Professor Joseph Soeters from the Netherlands
