The Structure of the Book

Section 2: Open Coding

Chapter 2 describes the initial research methodology I used to collect data in studies of two blind adult student communities at the universities of Leicester and Bristol. In terms of the grounded methodology, it eventually became the precursor and pilot study to the framework and data collection methods that are set out in chapters 4 and 5. Three main techniques were employed in this phase of the fieldwork, including interviewing, participant diaries, and observations. The chapter also describes how these data collection methods were applied, the original reasons for conducting this research, and the anxiety it caused the research participants. All of the methodological strands will be discussed in the chapter in separate sections, each of which introduces the research approach, the type of data collected, and the theory that underpins the methods.

Chapter 3 examines an approach to ethical research in this first phase of fieldwork developed for the blind participants, targeting their specific needs. This discussion is split into two parts: The first describes the considerations I used to determine the manner and form of data gathering, including the choice of the original research methodology, the media that were used to collect the data, and my conduct during its practice. The second describes the use of this data and its presentation, analysis, and storage; the media that were used in the eventual presentation of the results; and the consent and feedback that were received from and given to the participants during this phase of the research.

Section 3: Axial Coding

Chapter 4 introduces the development of the methodological framework in the late 1990s as a result of the first phase of research. This represents the rehypothecation stage of the grounded methodology and was subsequently used in the design of the data collection methods for the fieldwork described in chapter 5. In chapter 4, the discussion of the framework
