The generosity of my colleagues at Stony Brook University has also contributed greatly to this journey. I am most fortunate to have Robert Harvey as my chair in the Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory. Robert’s encouragement and support of all things pertaining to my professional and personal life has been significant. Mary Moran-Luba, our departmental administrator, is the wonder woman who fulfills all my requests in the department without complaints. Alinda Askew, our undergraduate secretary, has also helped in great length by assisting me with the logistics of my undergraduate teaching. My department mentor, Krin Gabbard always have answers to my questions about teaching and publishing. Jackie Reich is always around when I need someone to talk to. Ray Guins and I are great support for one another ever since we joined the department around the same time. I have also gained much from E. Ann Kaplan’s support and benefitted from the events organized by the Humanities Institute headed by her. Lisa Diedrich and Victoria Hesford have been my friends and mentors since my first semester at Stony Brook. We are even closer now with the formation of our new department. I also want to acknowledge the mentorship of Sandy Petrey, Izabela Kalinowska and Mary Jo Bona, and the friendship of Melissa Forbis. Iza has been a friend since the summer program at New York-St. Petersburg Summer Institute in 2008, and Mary Jo has been very supportive of the kind of multiethnic work I engaged with. To many more of my colleagues whom I am not able to thank individually here, thank you. The effort of the staff at Stony Brook University Interlibrary Loan Office in gathering many materials for this project also has to be acknowledged.

I want to personally thank Iona Man-Cheong, my university mentor for spending much time advising me, and endorsing the significance of my work on Sinophone studies. Also, without Nerissa Balce this book would have taken much longer to complete. We are the best writing partners.
