Introduction

It seems like only yesterday when this study was fully under way, when data poured in to bring about enlightenment regarding the important, pioneering work of California Virtual Charter Schools (CAVA). However, 18 months have come and gone and the good news is that this phenomenon still continues to grow, thrive, and mature as a viable, alternative model of contemporary education. What began only 4 years ago as a vision of hope in the minds of CAVA’s innovators has taken root solidly, stabilized, and even flourished within a system that one might have thought could not support such a possibility. Though the well established system, traditional public schooling, has concurrently undergone a season of intense standardization and increased accountability, it nonetheless opened a tiny window of opportunity for out-of-the-box reform by endorsing the virtual charter school.
