The proceedings of the symposium appeared, under the auspices of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, in the book Gli Italiani Negli Stati Uniti (1970). The English version of my paper was published in the Journal of European Economic History (Banco di Roma, Vol. 3, Number 3, Winter 1974, pp. 705–23) under the title “Italy from the American Immigration Quota Act of 1921 to Mussolini’s Policy of Grossraum: 1921–24.”
Several American colleagues participated in the symposium, and their papers were also original and covered a variety of topics: Italian emigration, political participation and leadership, community integration, ethnic interests and conflicts, criminality, assimilation, and civic participation. To put it into context, with this symposium, Italian–American historiography in the United States had abandoned the confines of localism and provincialism and had entered the realm of national and international discourse.
My research continued and more essays followed based on archival documents. One of the publications contained the Manifesto of the North American Anti Fascist Alliance, edited and translated in English and Italian and published in Labor History (Summer 1972) and in Affari Sociali Internazionali, n. 1–2, 1974.
The late professor Renzo De Felice published “L’Atteggiamento della stampa cattolico moderata Americana verso il Fascismo prima e dopo la Conciliazione” in Storia Contemporanea (Anno II, n. 4, 1971, pp. 717–37), later reprinted in the book Modernismo, Fascismo, Comunismo, Aspetti e Figure della Cultura e della Politica dei Cattolici nel ’900, a cura di Giuseppe Rossini (1972, pp. 47–67).
“Fascist and Anti Fascist Reaction in the United States to the Matteotti Murder,” was published in Studies in Italian American Social History, Essays in Honor of Leonardo Covelli (1975, pp. 50–65).
The essay “Modigliani’s Visit to the United States and the American Labor Party” (13 Articles for the New Leader, June 18, 1927–October 15, 1938) appeared in Rivista di Studi Politici Internazionali (Anno LII, n. 206, 1985, pp. 241–78).
