Foreword

Prior to meeting Lisa Anne Zilney, I had little knowledge of this relatively new area of research, and most of my colleagues were similarly ignorant. Scholars in 1991 formed the International Society of Anthrozoology as the first professional society with annual meetings for reports on research into human-animal interactions. The Society sponsors a journal for scholarly work on human-animal studies, Anthrozoos. Other such specialty journals have since emerged, including the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, Society & Animals, and Animal Welfare. Despite its newbie status, even the quickest internet perusal shows the liveliness of the field:

  • A Teaching Resource Manual for use in creating courses regarding Animals in Society was offered by the American Sociological Association at the 2005 annual meeting by the Animals & Society section.
  • Scholars in 2005 held a working conference in Raleigh, North Carolina to plan the further development of the field of Human-Animal Studies.
  • The Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction sponsored a session at the 2005 annual meeting entitled, “Human-Animal Interactions and Relationships.”
