The hallmark of the “Curitiba experiment” is to execute low-cost projects in a reasonable time period. Dr. Vassoler gives the full background of these remarkable developments and the details of the decision-making process behind them.

This book should be a must for anyone interested in Latin American urbanization and urban planning/administration. If you are a professor who teaches Latin America or urban planning, this book should be placed on your reading list for your students. It should become a guidebook for those involved in the governing of Latin American cities and other cities in middle-income economies, which share many similar problems. I would hope that citizen advocates in Latin America urban areas would pick up this book, show it to their local politicians, and point out that there is no need to wait for someday in the future for things to get better. Those involved in urban planning and city administration in high-income countries should also find much to garner from this book.

Hopefully, we will see many more books from Dr. Vassoler as this one was intelligent, insightful, and a pleasure to read.
