Acknowledgments

In memory of Milton Santos (1926–2001), Brazilian urban geographer and social critic, for his seminal work on urbanization and his struggles for a more equitable urban development process worldwide.

The research behind this book was made possible, thanks to the support of several people. I am grateful to the late Professor Milton Santos, who, despite his poor health, gracefully received me for an interview in his office at the University of São Paulo. I am equally thankful to Jorge Wilheim, Cândido Malta Campos Filho, and Jaime Lerner, all accomplished Brazilian urban planners and scholars of urbanization, who took the time to share their knowledge with me.
