In memory of Milton Santos (1926–2001), Brazilian urban geographer and social critic, for his seminal work on urbanization and his struggles for a more equitable urban development process worldwide.
The research behind this book was made possible, thanks to the support of several people. I am grateful to the late Professor Milton Santos, who, despite his poor health, gracefully received me for an interview in his office at the University of São Paulo.
