Captain Thomas Macdonough hoisted a signal that not only reminded sailors of what they were fighting for, but also riffed on a Nelson aphorism: “Impressed seamen call on every man to do his duty.”33 Finally, it was Nelson's biography, not Jones’, that the United States Navy chose to issue to every officer and rating in the U.S. Navy.34
