Stockton soon received evidence that the department had been reading Rodgers’ dispatches, for, on the ninth of December (within two and a half months), Stockton was commissioned a lieutenant.74 Returning home for Christmas, Stockton nursed a hand injury from his derring-do in Baltimore,75 but on that New Year's Eve, Stockton wrote to Rodgers requesting another post with him aboard USS Guerriere. In that letter, Stockton reviewed all that Rodgers had done for him thus far:
