When I began this project in 2004, I wanted to understand more about the lives of Asian Americans and how individuals of different ethnicities interpret the meaning of race and ethnicity in their lives. Although I did not explicitly ask them to talk about how they viewed race and ethnicity, they offered these responses unsolicited. Because my method of data collection was a Web survey, I had preset questions that I asked throughout to have some standardization, but I also was given sage advice that I should provide all participants with the option of giving me any information that they would like me to know about them. This provided me with very rich qualitative data that helped to supplement the quantitative findings in the study. Giving my participants their own voice allowed me to understand much more about the Asian American experience, and through their sharing of their thoughts I was able to learn much more about the totality of their lives, for this I thank them greatly.
